1. Get the Basic Information

Vincent Van Gogh was part of a movement of painters and artists that were constantly discussing art and beauty and sharing techniques and inspirations.

In this exhibition, it is easy to see some similar techniques or echoes when it comes to lights and colors. This expedition also was a cornerstone in Gauguin’s imagery and style.

This is also the first time that this period in his life is the object of an exhibition (he is much more famous for his later work in Tahiti).

The exhibition is quite small, and displays a lot of sketches from Gauguin that had not be reunited before.

And if you certainly know that Van Gogh cut his own ear, you may not know it was linked to Gauguin. Their friendship knew a lot of fights, and they were at the same place that night, even though we will probably never know exactly what happened!

2. Get Further

""

The exhibition opens with a slideshow of old pictures from Martinique, then on 2 self-portraits by Gauguin and Laval, on which can be read “a l’ami Vincent” (To [our] friend Vincent).

The exhibition is quite small. After all, Gauguin only painted (to our knowledge) 11 paintings in Martinique. But the visitors will discover very interesting sketches that he used also after he got back to Paris.

The exhibition thus also shows some of his latter works that resonates with his travel to the island.

Laval on his hand is an almost forgotten artist. He died young and most of his paintings were then attributed to Gauguin (maybe as an attempt to inflate the value of the paintings). This exhibition helps to rehabilitate the name of someone that Van Gogh appreciated and saw as very talented.

Credit to the exhibition goes to the fact that they managed to get pieces from museums all over the globe, some even from Japan. Assembling such an exhibition, even though it may not seem like much is indeed an event.

3. Become an Expert

""

Gauguin (39 years-old) and the young Laval (26) are at the time trying to make ends meet and to find their identity in the vibrant and artsy movement of the time. Looking for new ideas, techniques and subjects, they take a trip to Panama, and then arrive to the French Caribbean and the sunny island of Martinique, where they both explore the deep greens of the vegetation, but also the exoticism of the people and occupations. The black women picking and collecting fruit and living their everyday lives will inspire both the painters in different ways.

Gauguin sees there some sort of a lost Eden where the lush nature and half naked bodies feel more real and right than the grey and growing industrial Europe.

Laval does not forget however that the people are working hard and goes in a slightly different direction. In many ways, although Laval is now quite forgotten, his sense of structure, proportions and composition appears almost more mature than Gauguin’s at that time.

But one thing is obvious no matter the artist. The brushstrokes, the contouring in unexpected colors, and the light effects prove how close they were from Van Gogh and other artists that were at the crossing between impressionism and the soon-to-come modern art.
